The 20th Annual Black Women’s Expo which concluded on Sunday April 7, was more than just a huge success, it was a defining moment for the thousands of women who convened at Chicago’s McCormick for informative symposiums, powerful performances and a variety of vendors. At center stage, “The View” talk show host Sherri Shepherd, who entertained the throngs of women with nearly a two-hour-long, candid discussion about women’s issues, ranging from health and beauty to family and career. Shepherd’s home-girl style of humour frequently elicited outbursts of laughter from Expo participants, but it was her passion-filed discussion about her family and son that elicited nods of understanding and approval from the women in the room.
Shepherd also introduced her popular wig line on the Expo’s exhibition floor to a scores of women who embraced the styles and clamoured to buy the stunning hair pieces.
“This is the best event of this kind ever,” said Mike Housey of the Chicago Defender, as Expo participants within earshot nodded in agreement.
On Friday, April 5, Black Women’s Expo organizers and primary sponsor, State Farm Insurance acknowledged that the event had the ear markings of being the largest in the Expo’s history as on opening day, the numbers of participants far exceeded those for any past opening day.
Another major draw, a show-stopping performance from beloved actress and gospel singer Tamela Mann. known for her role as Cora in Tyler Perry's plays, including I Can Do Bad All By Myself, Diary of a Mad Black Woman, Madea's Family Reunion, Madea's Class Reunion, Meet the Browns, and What's Done in the Dark. Mann who currently stars in the hit television series “Meet the Browns” was enthusiastically received by the standing-room only crowd.
And as always Black Women’s Expo attendees rewarded themselves by accessing and purchasing the best and the latest in hair, health and beauty products, jewellery, clothing and food items.
