Incumbent Wharton comes up roses

  • Written by Kelvin Cowans
The overly popular Frankie Beverly & Maze song, “We are One,” ushered in the arrival of Mayor-Elect AC Wharton and his family. Victory looks good on people but it shined on him. The Memphis Botanical Garden has always been a place where peace and serenity are cousins. Exotic flowers take turns to wow you every few feet. Many worries are often lost in just the smell of this man-made paradise. Home to many marriages and great memories, the tradition continues. Thursday proved to be beautiful business as usual except for the fact that on this particular evening the backdrop of the Botanical Garden had become the garden of Mayor AC Wharton Jr.

“Play some music so I can get back to my normal cheery self,” said Mayor AC Wharton Jr. at his victory celebration Wednesday night at the Memphis Botanic Garden. Wharton said he had been an angry person in recent months, particularly upset by those who acted as if Memphians didn’t have the intelligence to recognize the city’s progress. Incumbent Mayor AC Wharton Jr.’s landslide win was reflected in living colors – black, white, brown and various shades in-between.

Packed into a room with seemingly as many nationalities as one might witness in New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport, there certainly was room to argue this: That if we are not “One Memphis” yet, it may not take as long as some naysayers think.

The overly popular Frankie Beverly & Maze song, “We are One,” ushered in the arrival of Mayor-Elect AC Wharton and his family. Victory looks good on people but it shined on him. After a heart-felt introduction by his son, AC Wharton III, and a couple of others, the Lebanon, Tenn.-born Wharton took center stage.

“Let me level with you for a minute. I’m a very cheerful person, but over these last couple of months I have been an angry person. I’m not upset at anything that has happened to me, but the way people have treated the intelligence of the citizens of Memphis is a shame. Acting as if there hasn’t been any progress in our city,” said Wharton.

“We have been working together and we have big corporations coming in bringing a lot of jobs. They try to tell us that we can’t hang with the big boys like Chicago and L.A., but we can and we will. We are going to take Memphis to its destiny,” he said.

“We are one Memphis and there is nothing that we can’t accomplish, if we do it together and not with all of this division talk. One Memphis, One Memphis, One Memphis. Now play some music so I can get back to my normal cheery self.”

The DJ obliged and the party was in full effect. All kinds of cold cuts, chips and dip. Drinks were abundant to quench the thirst of the followers of the night’s champion.  Everybody was meeting and greeting. I hadn’t seen this many happy faces since the Grinch couldn’t steal Christmas in Whoville.

Flat screens throughout the room showed Wharton’s landslide win in living colors – black, white, brown, and various shades in-between.

I was able to steal a moment with the very ecstatic Mayor.

Your work in our great city is well documented and continues to grow in leaps and bounds, so will you please tell me how you personally plan to celebrate this second term as Mayor, I asked.

“I will be at work first thing in the morning. I have a meeting with the Ambassador from France. We are meeting to go over a few items, one of which is how to give hope and help to our citizens. As a government, sometimes the resources aren’t there to help, but hope should always be there. And that's our job, to relay that message".
