Healthy eating can back up the grim reaper

One out of three Americans is obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. I know I’m being redundant when I cite statistics time and time again, but I’m trying to make a point. For example, I read the other day a report that ranked Tennessee as the third leading state in the country for its number of obese people. That means a lot of people are not eating right.

My clients are aware of my dogged determination to get them to eat healthy, and they follow my lead. But it amazes me when I hear that some of our great cooks are gifted in the kitchen, but their delicious dishes are not as healthy as they claim, especially if they’re having their own issues with weight and other health concerns.

It’s not a pretty picture to see someone grappling with obesity. I know it’s hard on obese people to shed the weight, but imagine if you’re gravely ill and someone, such as a family member, has to take care of you. That’s a whole lot of work and too much pressure for someone to become a caretaker when he or she has other responsibilities.

I’m sure you wouldn’t want to be someone’s caretaker unless you are compelled to deal with his or her dire circumstances. And then, too, I’m sure you wouldn’t want to be at the mercy of someone who has to take care of all your needs for the rest of your life. That means feeding you, bathing you, and changing your Depends, if you have to wear them. In some cases, the care that you expect may not be what you actually get. It could be detrimental.

Food can be very addictive and not as comforting as you might think. I talked to someone the other day about how easy it is to eat the right kinds of food, such as fruit and vegetables. But the lure of hamburgers, pizzas, French fries and sugary soft drinks to quench the thirst, I think, is just too much to let go. If you don’t let go, you’ll begin to feel sluggish and the bulge will appear.

There is hope, but you won’t find it in President Barack Obama’s health care plan. Oh, I’m sure the plan may be a good piece of legislation for the American people, but I think, in large measure, it’s reactive. Sure, we need a good health care plan for those sorely in need of benefits, but we need to eat healthy to prevent a trip to the doctor in the first place.

There is no quick fix when it comes to restoring your health, but staying healthy is a choice you can make. Therefore, good nutrition is a must. There is so much information in the ether about food until we sometimes find it difficult to differentiate between what’s good food and what’s bad food. Health issues, though, are reversible.

It’s been hot as heck these last few days, and relief doesn’t seem likely anytime soon. Eating the wrong food can cause your body to feel the same way, like it’s about to implode. Your body temperature can rise and fall depending on what you put in your body. So beware: some foods can cause adverse reactions.

I hate to talk about death, but it’s a given that we will eventually face the grim reaper. I listened to someone talk about death this week and how close at hand it is. I was asked what I thought about it. In my response, I was able to comfort the young man. I could tell he wanted more out of life. But then he came to the conclusion that he’d made his own choices in life as they relate to his health.

“Why would I want to live now that I’m at death’s door?” he told me.

I thought about that for a moment, but didn’t get the point. I’m sure he meant well. It’s just that I didn’t understand why he would give up on life, even if the grim reaper might be lurking in the shadows. Life is so precious and you’re only given one chance to make it right.

So why not eat healthy so that you won’t have to depend on a caretaker or wait on the grim reaper.
