Taking back your power: a place to start

Dear Lucy: ... I eat all the time because it makes me feel better. But when I go to the doctor I am ashamed and scared of what I will hear next. I don’t know what to do.

Dear Lucy: Last year I was diagnosed with diabetes and had to start taking the shots every day. I have been through so much and this just made it worse. I just couldn’t stay on the diet or do the exercise. I eat all the time because it makes me feel better. But when I go to the doctor I am ashamed and scared of what I will hear next. I don’t know what to do.

Dear Reader: I am so sorry for your predicament. I know what it feels like to want to do better and not be able to stay with it when you try. This can happen to anybody with small or large challenges. Blame does no good and neither does shame.

There can be so many reasons for your inability to follow your doctor’s instructions. I read somewhere that sadness, whether open or hidden, is often an issue for people with sugar metabolism problems. You mentioned having already been through a lot. Sometimes when life seems hard or hopeless we feel like the least we can do is get some sweetness and satisfaction from our food. It’s cheap, easy, quick, keeps us company and way more dependable sometimes than people.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t make the problems or the sadness go away and stay away. One of the things that can help is to begin to pay attention to what you are thinking about just before you lose control and start eating what you shouldn’t. Is it something you are afraid of, something that makes you sad or angry or ashamed? If it is an emotional pain, before you reach for the food, stop and reach for a pleasurable memory or a time when you felt good about yourself.

You can also reach for a favorite Bible quote, or you can reach for the phone and call your prayer partner or the person who can talk to you about something positive. This won’t always stop you, but it will help you to begin to feel stronger and give you a place to start to take back some of your power.

Instead of counting the times you fail, count the times you are successful. Choose sweetness for yourself. Make up a list of sweet things that are free and don’t require anyone else to get to. Imagine yourself as the king or queen of “sweet” without the food and just enjoy yourself.
