Re-inventing You!

Continually re-inventing ourselves is actually our God-given right and expectancy. We will evolve, become or transform by design or by accident.
 Lucy Shaw

I just finished a conversation with a dear friend who commented that I had seemingly re-invented myself a gazillion times! Her question to me was “How do you re-invent yourself?” That’s a great question and I have learned by trial and error. But, I do have some firm ideas about it now that helping people to do it is my work!

Continually re-inventing ourselves is actually our God-given right and expectancy. We will evolve, become or transform by design or by accident. Doing it by design is a lot more fun! Evolution (expanding and growing into something new) is why we are here in the first place. Our individual growth blesses us and the entire planet.

Step 1:  The mind can be your greatest enemy and your greatest friend. We first have to get into the right mind-set about capacity and worthiness. ‘Capacity’ means asking yourself what you truly believe about your gifts, skills and talents. Take a personal inventory. What are you good at; what do you enjoy doing; what comes easy to you? The things that we enjoy and that come easy to us are usually our gifts and talents. These are always safe places to begin the transformation. Ask how you might take those and stretch them. How do you turn those gifts and talents into expert doings?

Worthiness refers to the need to ask yourself if you really believe that you deserve to be bigger, better, happier, and to go to a new level. Sometimes we get stuck because we unconsciously believe that we don’t deserve any more than we have. And when we are always talking about how we “ought” to have what the next person has, don’t be fooled into thinking that this means you believe that you deserve a thing. True deserving has to do with having a fundamental belief that even though we may not be created into equal circumstances, we are all created into equal potential! The test is our capacity for believing and working our belief. We can never have or hold something we don’t believe in or work for.

Step 2: Another big and important question is this…WHY? Why do I want to change? Remember, I said that we change by design or accident. Accidental change tends to come as a result of unconscious fears, dreads, doubts, and mean putting down self-talk.  Remember what Job said; “The thing I feared most has come upon me.” Look back on all the ways you have changed in this lifetime. How many of them were intentional? Many were probably by accident.

The good news is that you have decided to make a conscious change. The better news is that you can set your intention by affirming every single day that “I am ready to become a bigger, better, greater contribution to the planet.” This invites opportunity into your life. After you begin to say this, take time every day to listen for inner urgings and opportunities as well as outer. Opportunities to learn and do more than you have before will appear. Pay attention!

There is much more to this process, but these steps will get you started and represent important starter steps.
