Girls Inc. nets $80,000 grant for after-school snacks effort

The Tennessee Department of Human Services has awarded Girls Incorporated of Memphis with a grant worth up to $80,000.

The Tennessee Department of Human Services has awarded Girls Incorporated of Memphis with a grant worth up to $80,000 to provide healthy food to area children through the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP).

Girls Inc. serves hundreds of young girls at its after-school centers and has received food assistance from the City of Memphis for several years. This grant, which reimburses Girls Inc. for the purchase of nutritious snacks and meals, will ensure the girls have more regular access to healthy options from all food groups.

Deborah Hester-Harrison, the organization’s president and CEO, said, “Because of the additional costs, we have been limited in the types of nutritious snacks we could provide on a regular basis. This grant is a true blessing.”

Girls Inc. expects to impact approximately 500 girls at ten after-school centers during the 2012-13 school year.
