Why Google should call some black friends

google 600Google just did something few tech companies have shown interest in doing: It seriously confronted the issue of diversity – or, rather, its lack thereof.

The company issued a report on its workforce diversity, and let’s just say, if it had wanted to, the report could have been summarized as follows: “When it comes to Latino and black employees, we have almost no diversity.” At the moment, 2 percent of Google’s workforce is black, despite black Americans making up 13 percent of the population. Hispanics are just 3 percent of its workforce, despite being nearly 17 percent of the population.

To its credit, Google not only commissioned the report – something it did not have to do – but also shared the results, something it also did not have to do.

Your ex has moved on and can’t be friends? Get over it

demetria 600Dear Demetria:

I was actually helping my ex-boyfriend try to get his girlfriend back when somehow we ended up hooking up. Now he's back with his girl and he tells me we can’t be friends anymore. I'm really hurt because he is also one of my best friends and I love his presence in my life. I believe he feels the same way. I'm not trying to get back with him. I just want to keep the great friendship we've built over the past six years. I can't have a friendship with him because he has a girlfriend now? —A.C.

Memphis VA not immune from national scandal pushback

Veterans Affairs_600Before the VA hospital scandal made its way to Washington, D.C., and landed squarely on the desk of President Barack Obama, the Memphis VA Medical Center was mired in its own scandal in 2012, the year three patients died in the emergency room. An investigation ensued and the VA Office of Inspector General (OIG) Office of Healthcare Inspections concluded that the deaths resulted from inadequate care.

Widespread problems with the nation's hospitals for veterans – including recent reports of delayed treatments, preventable deaths, and efforts to falsify records – drew a strong rebuke from the president: "I will not stand for it," said Obama, who met with Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki in the Oval Office last week prior to a news conference.

The VA facility in Phoenix particularly drew the ire of the president and prompted the OIG to investigate. The inspector general announced the department's findings on Wednesday (May 28th): At least 1,700 veterans at the medical center were not registered on the proper waiting lists to see the doctors, thereby causing veterans to be at risk of being forgotten or lost.
