University of Memphis' Joe Jackson is the Conference USA Player of the Week for Dec. 31-Jan. 6.
It is the first C-USA Player of the Week honor of Jackson's career. He was named C-USA Rookie of the Week Dec. 27, 2010, during his freshman campaign.
The league honor is his second weekly accolade of the 2012-13 season, as he was named the Tennessee Sports Writers Association (TSWA) Player of the Week for Dec. 10-16.
Last week, the 6-foot-1 guard led Memphis to an 85-80 victory over in-state rival Tennessee before a national television audience on ESPN2. Jackson posted team highs of 20 points, seven assists and four steals in the win. He shot 55.6 percent from the field, 50 percent from the arc and 81.8 percent from the free throw line versus the Volunteers.
In the first half against Tennessee, Jackson accounted for 10-straight points (two FT, layup, three assists) that extended a 20-19 lead to 30-23. He also assisted on Antonio Barton's three-pointer before halftime to give the Tigers a 42-27 advantage, their biggest lead of the first half.
After the break, Jackson accounted for 10 points (layup, three-point play, two assists) in a 20-13 run that extended the Memphis lead to 62-41. The Memphis native sealed the win from the free throw line in the final :14, hitting all four of his charity tosses.
In his last eight games (since the Tigers returned from The Bahamas), the two-time Conference USA Tournament MVP is averaging 16.0 points and 5.6 assists, while shooting 56.9 percent from the floor, 50 percent from the arc and 74.5 percent from the free throw line.
Jackson is ranked among the C-USA leaders in scoring (15th), assists (5th), free throw percentage (10th), three-point field goal percentage (2nd), steals (6th) and assist-turnover ratio (5th).
The Tigers (10-3) return to action Wednesday, Jan. 9 with their Conference USA opener against East Carolina (9-4) at FedExForum. The game, to be televised on SportSouth, is scheduled for a 7 p.m. (CT) start.
