Shealey new School Board president

On Dec. 3 the Pittsburgh Public School District Board of Directors elected Sharene Shealey as its new president.

Shealey, who has served on the board since 2009, represents District 1, which includes Westinghouse Academy 6-12, Lincoln PreK-5, Faison K-5, Sterrett 6-8, Linden K-5, Obama 6-12 and Pittsburgh Student Achievement Center.

Outgoing board president Sherry Hazuda, who represents District 6, nominated Shealey. She was elected by a vote of 6-3 with Hazuda, Theresa Colaizzi, Jean Fink, Bill Isler, and Floyd McCrea supporting her.

Shealey, who lives in Point Breeze is a PPS graduate and the mother of three PPS students. Shealey works as a chemical engineer and has served as a negotiations committee chairperson, education committee chairperson, Right to Education Task Force Liaison and air quality control specialist.

Competing with Shealey for the presidency was District 2 representative Regina Holley. Holley was nominated by District 8 Representative Mark Brentley and supported by Thomas Sumpter who represents District 3.

Sumpter was elected as first vice president and Isler was elected second vice president.

Shealey did not return calls for a statement before Courier press time.
