Get out the goulashes, tire chains and fur coats, Atlanta, snow may be on the way to the metro area. The National Weather Service is predicting that the rain, which has settled over north Georgia the past two days, could turn to snow on Thursday, with accumulations possible as far south as the northern suburbs of the city, forecasters said.

The National Weather Service issued a statement saying that a "deep cold air mass will begin to spread into the area from west to east Thursday afternoon and evening. As a result, there is a potential for rain to change over to snow across parts of north Georgia if sufficient wrap around moisture can spread back into the cold air mass behind the departing cold front."

The Weather Service said that snowfall rates could be enough for light accumulations, especially on grassy and elevated surfaces by late Thursday afternoon or early evening.

Metro Atlanta, though, will likely not see any real flurries.

"Although light snow could be seen as far south as a LaGrange to Athens line, it appears the greater chances for snow accumulation would be generally north of the I-20 corridor west of Atlanta and the I-85 corridor east of Atlanta," the Weather Service said.

Meanwhile, much of the state, including most of metro Atlanta, is still under a flood watch as rainfall totals have climbed since the rain began Sunday night.

Despite the possible snow, meteorologists are calling for warmer temperatures (above freezing) for the days following Thursday.

Friday and Saturday should be sunny, with highs in the 50s and lows in the low to mid-30s early Friday and in the 40s Saturday morning.
