Clayton County Police Capture Escaped Prisoner Near Schools

This afternoon, Lovejoy High School and Lovejoy Middle School were placed on temporary lockdown because of an escaped prisoner in the area.

Georgia Corrections officials reported that 50-year-old inmate Steven Bone fled from an outside maintenance detail job at Love Joy Regional Park. A statewide lookout was put into effect.

Police say that Bone was captured just before schools let out for the day. He was discovered in a patch of woods near a soccer complex.

Bone has been serving a 20-year sentence for cruelty to an elderly person since 2004. According to department of corrections records, Bone was also arrested in October 2001 for making terroristic threats.

Although officials from Georgia Corrections and Clayton County Police did not believe Bone to be dangerous, students from both schools were kept inside. No one was let inside either school.

According to Clayton County Schools spokesman David Waller, the two schools were on lockdown for two hours while the search continued.

"Lovejoy middle and high schools went on lockdown around noon today at the request of local law enforcement officials," he said. "The lockdown was lifted at 2 p.m. after it was determined that there was no threat to either of these two schools."
