The Rev. Joseph E. Lowery (center) and U.S. Rep. John Lewis participate in a program on Aug. 28 at the Georgia State Capitol to commemorate the 49th anniversary of the March on Washington. Their conversation was moderated by Atlanta Daily World Publisher M. Alexis Scott. Bernice King, CEO of the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change, greeted the audience and encouraged them to continue the struggle for justice. Lewis is the last surviving speaker from that day. Lowery was one of the founders with King of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. The program was presented by The Martin Luther King Jr. Advisory Council of Georgia. See Lewis’ commentary on the Aug. 28, 1963, March on Washington Anniversary in Viewpoints.
