The Dekalb County Board of Education accepted a consolidated budget just over $1 million in a vote last week for the 2013-14 fiscal year.
Chief Financial Officer Michael Bell estimates between $15.6 and $16.8 million in excess revenues although there were prior estimations of $9.1 million.
“Since coming on board, I’ve made getting our financial house in order a priority,” said current Superintendent Michael Thurmond. “These excess revenues reflect our districts new visions and commitment to our community.”
Funds from the budget will go towards school nutrition and athletics, trust and agency funds, debt service, and special revenue. The budget also includes $4 million expected to go towards the purchase of textbooks and educational supplies.
There will be $3 million included to compensate a reduction of one furlough day for 10- and 11-month employees, as well as principals and central office employees that do not receive a yearly salary exceeding $80,000.
The budget is valid throughout June 30, 2014.
