City of Atlanta to Temporarily Suspend Red Light Camera Program

The City of Atlanta is transitioning the contract for operations of its Red Light Camera Program. The current contract with Xerox will expire Friday at midnight. At that point, all Red Light Cameras within the City of Atlanta limits will cease to operate.
The Red Light Camera Program is expected to resume by mid-May 2013, pending the installation of a new vendor. A public notice will be distributed 30 days in advance of camera reactivation.
The City of Atlanta seeks to provide a safe traveling environment for our residents and visitors. Therefore, the Department of Public Works in conjunction with the Atlanta Police Department, and in consultation with the Georgia Department of Transportation, researched accident data and traffic analysis in order to develop a process whereby the use of Red Light Camera technology may be used in high incident locations inside the City. Red light cameras are currently permitted and operational at the following locations:
• Spring Street at North Avenue
• Cleveland Avenue at Metropolitan Parkway
• Freedom Parkway at Boulevard
The program includes photographing license plates of vehicles that enter the selected intersection after the traffic signals have turned red, and issuing those motorists a ticket by mail. The purpose for the program is to improve traffic safety by decreasing the number of red light violations and the accidents they cause.
Drivers are urged to obey all traffic laws whether or not cameras are active and/or installed at any location. Red light camera running is a moving offense that could contribute to vehicular collisions. Violators are subject to a $70 fine per offense. The program is managed by the Department of Public Works in association with the Atlanta Police Department and the Atlanta Municipal Court.
