Gun Used in Grady High School Shooting Was Stolen - Police

A gun that went off inside Grady High School last month was stolen by the 17-year-old student who shot herself, Atlanta Police investigators say.

According to multiple reports, Morgan Tukes accidentally shot herself in the thigh outside the school building with a stolen .380 Taurus handgun that was in her possession. She has been charged with felony possession of a pistol by a minor, carrying a weapon within a school safety zone, reckless conduct and disruption of a public school in the Feb. 27 incident.

Her arrest in the accidental shooting also led to her being charged in a previously unsolved hit and run from October.

She may also be facing more charges.

WSB and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution report that she may face more charges due to the status of the gun.

According to WSB:

"Investigators now believe the gun found at Grady had been stolen. They said the serial numbers on the weapon were filed down."

WSB said Atlanta Police detectives are also looking into whether a shooting on Boulevard a few days before the Grady incident was related to Tukes taking the gun to school.

Police are now looking into whether gang activity was at the root of the accidental shooting and possession of the illegal firearm.

Parents at the school report that metal detectors have been installed at the school and there are now long wait times to get inside.

Atlanta police declined to say where Tukes may have gotten the gun she allegedly brought to Grady.
