Former County Commissioner Convicted of Vandalism

    CHICAGO (AP) —

A judge has found a former Cook County commissioner guilty of a misdemeanor charge of destroying a campaign sign belonging to his opponent days before the 2010 election.

At a hearing on Tuesday in Bridgeview, Cook County Judge Kerry Kennedy sentenced Tony Peraica to four months of court supervision.

Peraica was a two-term Republican commissioner when he was arrested in the suburb of McCook after witnesses told police he had vandalized a sign of McCook Mayor Jeffrey Tobolski outside a restaurant.

Peraica, who did not testify during the trial, said after the hearing that he was shocked by the verdict.

Tobolski, who defeated Peraica, said he was glad the case was over and called Peraica "his own worst enemy."
