CHICAGO (AP) — There will be more affordable housing in Cook County this year.

In a news release on Monday, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle announced the creation of more than 1,350 new affordable housing units in 2012.

The release says the new units are part of a push by Preckwinkle to revitalize the Housing Authority of Cook County.

Of the 1,350 units, 1,000 will be for people who qualify for the federal government's Section 8 housing program. Another 200 are units that have been used for other purposes that will now be used as affordable housing, and 150 are units that are being designated for homeless veterans through federal funding.

The Housing Authority of Cook County is the state's second largest provider of affordable housing.
