CHICAGO (AP) — The U.S. Postal Service says Chicago ranks high among cities for dog attacks on mail carriers.
There were 30 dog attacks on postal workers last year in Chicago. That puts Chicago at No. 11, tied with Philadelphia.
Los Angeles topped the list with 83 dog attacks on postal employees last year.
Chicago Postmaster Karen Schenck says letter carriers often hear "Don't worry. My dog won't bite" before they are attacked.
The Postal Service asks residents to keep dogs inside when letter carriers and others who aren't familiar with your dog come to your home. The Postal Service says letter carriers who fear for their safety are allowed to stop delivery and ask homeowners to pick up their mail at the post office until a pet is restrained.
