It's a small world after all: Why the legacy of Star Wars is now secure

It's a small world after all: Why the legacy of Star Wars is now secure

The new “Star Wars” game, “Star Wars: 1313” was unveiled at this year’s E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo). It promises a grittier, more adult “Star Wars” experience.

So, Disney drops $4 billion to acquire Lucasfilm Ltd., and the Internet world goes off on a sugar high with all the possibilities therein. But first, there was a bunch of head scratching. I mean, didn’t they just purchase Marvel? And, it’s Disney. How edgy can Disney be?

Let’s put aside the sacred original trilogy for a moment and examine the best moments in “Star Wars” since the release of “The Phantom Menace.”

Darth Maul vs. Obi-Wan vs. Qui-Gon Jinn (“Star Wars: Episode 1: The Phantom Menace”) – You can call it the centerpiece of this disappointing 1999 film that brought “Star Wars” back to the big screen after a more than 15-year absence. It has entertaining parts, and some people really enjoy this movie despite Jar Jar Binks. What nearly all “Star Wars” fans will agree upon is how cool the Darth Maul vs. Obi-Wan scene was in the movie. For that alone, “The Phantom Menace” is okay in my book.

Yoda vs. Count Dooku (“Star Wars: The Clone Wars”) – I can still hear all the cheers of the audience when Master Yoda finally unleashed his lightsaber skills against Sith Master Count Dooku. Few people probably remember all the politics the movie engaged in because the real pop culture moment was Yoda’s and Yoda’s alone.

“The Clone Wars” – Before the critically acclaimed 3D animated “Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” there was simply, “The Clone Wars,” which also aired on the Cartoon Network. The series was designed and directed by “Dexter’s Laboratory” mastermind, Genndy Tartakovsky. This hyper-stylized version of “Star Wars” presented the jedi as pretty much superhuman, and that made it an awesome interpretation worth viewing. Once Lucas brought his own vision of

“The Clone Wars” to the small screen, he scaled back on the abilities.

Anakin Skywalker vs. Obi-Wan/Darth Sidious vs. Yoda – See a pattern? The prequel films really ramped up the light saber duels. One could argue that is was the best thing about the
prequel trilogy.

Cad Bane and the bounty hunters – No one’s badder in the “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” universe than bounty hunter Cad Bane. Just ask any Jedi on the series. This bounty hunter is a formidable opponent.

“The Night Sisters” Trilogy – If you love Asajj Ventress, “The Night Sisters Trilogy,” a set of three stand-alone episodes, is the character’s best outing. Probably the best “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” episodes so far.
