Faith & family are holiday shoe-ins

If you're up on shoe fashion you know that recently Nike released a new pair of shoes, the Bred 11's. While I'm not up on those types of shoes myself, I find that most boys my age (16) are.

I couldn't help but notice how guys were going bonkers over these shoes. The same pair of shoes that were released when my mother was a teenager.

Whenever a new pair of "to-die-for" shoes come out, I always hear from 30-plus-year-old adults who tell me how they still have those same shoes, which they reportedly bought as teens for half the price.

While we're flexing and flashing our new shoes on Instagram and Facebook, the shoe companies are laughing and taking our money to the bank. My social media feeds where flooded with people's pictures of their new shoes. Some had bought multiple pairs and planned to sell them.

Here's the kicker: the last time I checked, shoes – not even The Bred 11s – are the purpose of the holidays. Perks? Definitely, however, we should be celebrating the birth of Christ and the chance to be with our families.

In the wake of the murders at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newton, Conn., I'm encouraging everyone, while you play with your new gadgets and marvel at your new gifts, to take time to value your loved ones and your faith.

Such is the reason for the season. Because do you really think we would be let out of school for three weeks, just to play with toys?
