With diabetes growing as a killer, lifestyle change needed to beat it

If you’re diabetic, or know someone who is, I’m sure you’ve asked many times, “What causes diabetes?” Or, “Why did I get diabetes?”

If you’re diabetic, or know someone who is, I’m sure you’ve asked many times, “What causes diabetes?” Or, “Why did I get diabetes?” Those are questions I cannot answer, because one’s lifestyle may contribute to the onset of diabetes. As with anything else, the environment is key to how we live our day-to-day lives.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of diabetics in America has reached the epidemic mark – one in three people have the disease. The number is expected to double and triple in the future. Two reasons this madness is spiraling out of control: choice and lifestyle.

There are 79,000,003 diabetics, more than 26 million of them known diabetics. If you look at the disease in terms of what it’s costing, the amount is staggering and continues to escalate at a rapid pace. No matter how much information you might glean from advertisements, books, periodicals, radio, or from TV about diabetes, it is not enough to stop this fast-moving epidemic.

Diabetes is the third leading cause of death in America and soon to become the number one killer if something isn’t done to stop the onslaught. With so many Americans grappling with diabetes already, and many more diagnosed each day, the experts estimate that about 10-to-15 million Americans are unaware that they are diabetic.  

Uncontrolled diabetes is the leading cause of blindness and kidney failure. Once you have diabetes, you also risk developing heart disease, and heart disease can be a four-time greater threat. But usually sufferers are not aware that they have the disease until severe damage is done to their bodies.

Check these stats: In 1985, there were 30 million cases of diabetes worldwide. By the year 2000, it had increased to 277 million. And by the year 2030, it is estimated that at least 400 million people will become diabetics. Why? Because of aging, obesity and inactivity. Most cases of type II diabetes and pre-diabetes arise because of an ever-increasing population that is very overweight or moderately obese.

Type II diabetes used to be an adult disease, which now affects children at a very early age. So why do children develop a disease that once ransacked the bodies of adults? Because, in my opinion, parents have not taken time to prepare wholesome meals and awake their children out of inactivity.

A lifestyle change needed to treat diabetes requires a little planning and discipline. Diabetes can be reversed, believe it or not. However, don’t believe the hype that you cannot rid diabetes from your body altogether. You’ll have to work hard at it, though. The change starts in your mind first before you prepare your environment for change.  

I know what you’re saying: “How can I put down the food I love so much?” Well, eating is a complex behavior that human beings have trouble controlling. You have to toss the wrong food anyway if you plan to conquer the disease. Your choice of food and portion size has to be taken in consideration, though.

Until you’re ready to change your lifestyle and choice of food, you’ll continue to battle diabetes and more than likely lose the war. You must understand that you do not have to deal with the problems that come with diabetes; that you can possibly reverse or control the disease to the point or regaining total control of your life.  

Diabetes strikes and kills those who are aware and those who are unaware that they are diabetic. When was the last time you had your blood sugar taken or noticed signs that something was wrong with your body, such as frequent urination, weight loss, blurred vision, excessive thirst, a sore that’s slow to heal, irritability?

I cannot answer some questions – that’s for sure – but I know for certain that you’ll have to change your lifestyle, get plenty of exercise, and eat the right food if you hope to control diabetes or rid your body of it altogether. The choice is yours, but don’t wait too late.
