If death were the alternative, would you choose to eat healthy?

As a wellness coach and personal plant-based chef, I couldn’t help but think about the consequences of maintaining a bad diet.

Watching TV is not always a bad thing. Sometimes you can glean from it valuable information, such as the amount of food the average American consumes. The facts are startling. However, as a wellness coach and personal plant-based chef, I couldn’t help but think about the consequences of maintaining a bad diet. Death is the common denominator – but it doesn’t have to be.

I watch the Food Channel and pay attention to all the different dishes that the cooks prepare, which they claim are healthy and nutritious. Many of them are loaded with fat and grease and no doubt will stimulate the taste buds. However, as tasty as the dishes seem to be, you might feel like you’re in heaven until your health fails and you’re on your bed of affliction.

Food addiction can send you to an early grave, particularly if your choice of food is bad from the get-go. Without a doubt, your health will spiral downward and you won’t be able to regain your health unless you change your diet for the better. Over-the-counter drugs aren’t cure-alls, or the “Great White Hope” of wellness. It’ll just make you feel better sometimes, but look out for side-affects.

When it comes down to choosing the types of food we want to eat, the advertisers know how to whet our appetite. And in most cases, our taste buds are responsible for most of our health problems. Let me say this: If you’re invited to an event, you must remember that all “free” meals aren’t really free. You’ll pay one way or another, and medication can only sustain you temporarily. There’s no quick fix.

There has to be an answer to this madness – yes, I said madness – and it starts with putting the right food on the kitchen table. Don’t be a statistic, where one in three Americans is obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Although food may be emotionally comforting to you, it’s not an honor to be in the death club.

This is my opinion and my opinion alone: The pharmaceutical giants see dollar signs when we consume so much unhealthy food. We are suckered into believing that we are getting natural food, fat-free food, and no salt food, which in fact everything that’s processed can cause health problems.

There needs to be more regulation in the food industry. There is an advantage to eating more fiber and grain. Why not eat an apple instead of chips, for example, if you’re in a hurry? It won’t kill you; it’ll just fortify your body with the nutrients it needs.

I know you’re loaded with questions, such as: How do I stay healthy and fit and live a long and prosperous life? What must I do to overcome my bad eating habit and keep death at bay? How can I discern what’s good for me versus what’s bad for me when we’re overloaded with information?

Remember the character “Joe Camel” in the TV commercial puffing on a cigarette? He was cool indeed, but the message he conveyed was and still is deadly: Smoking causes cancer; it can kill you. The surgeon general makes that point painfully clear on each package of cigarettes.

Other TV commercials are just as deceptive, purporting to sell you the most wonderful product since slice bread. For example, the latest commercial that pushes the benefits of eating pizza, Oreo cookies, and drinking milk don’t seem healthy to me. The truth of the matter is the consumption of this combination can lead to some type of ailment, such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

Take control of your health today. Eat smarter and enjoy a healthy portion of fruit and vegetables. Get your exercise in too. We must make better food choices whether we’re at home or away. If death were the alternative, my choice would be to eat healthy and live. The message I’m conveying here is eat to live, not live to eat.

Death can be avoided. Remember the adage: “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Now that’s sage advice.
