Why I love ‘the game!’

One of the few games the Liberty Bowl will be packed. / The Sonic Boom of the South, The Aristocrats. / Pom-poms, in blue and white. ... In collaboration with SMC Entertainment President Fred Jones and the Southern Heritage Classic (SHC), The New Tri-State Defender offered its readers the chance to win four tickets and a parking pass to the 2011 SHC football game featuring the gridiron match-up between Jackson State University and Tennessee State University.

Readers had the opportunity to tell us in 150 words or less why they love ‘the game!” The writer of the most creative and original submission stood to win the tickets and the parking pass and a featured spot in our 2011 Southern Heritage Classic special edition.

And that’s not all. The selected pen-meister gets mentioned on the loud speaker at the game and then highlighted again in the TSD’s post-event coverage on Sept. 15.

And the winner is: Reginald Bowens of Cordova.

His entry:

One of the few games the Liberty Bowl will be packed.

The Sonic Boom of the South, The Aristocrats.

Pom-poms, in blue and white.

Air shows, fireworks, faux sticks of dynamite.

Pre-game field shows, by great high school bands.

The perfect way to spend a late summer afternoon.

Temptations, O’Jays, Babyface selections on deck.

Trumpets sing, “You’re talking out the side of your neck.”

Tennessee State’s, “I’m so glad” will have its side sway.

While JSU comes back, “We came to play.”

Tiger run-ons, chants and pep squads.

Tailgaters on Tiger Lane.

I can’t stand to see those 4 quarters come to an end.

Unless Jackson State wins.
