Before hosting the annual Bowling for Backpacks outing, Lionel Hollins Charities also will host Wine, SWAG, Jazz & Celebrities on Friday, Aug. 19 from 7-10 p.m. at the Crescent Club (6075 Poplar Ave, 9th Floor).
The cost of the Bowling for Backpacks event is $75 per person, or $300 per team of four. Participants will receive a free t-shirt, enjoy free food and soda and have the chance to win great prizes. Attendees will have the chance to bowl with Coach Hollins and local celebrities at an event where all the proceeds will go toward providing backpacks and school supplies for youth in the Mid-South who otherwise may not be able to afford them.
Individuals also will have the opportunity to receive complimentary back-to-school immunizations by bringing their current shot record, courtesy of the Shelby County Health Department, and will be able to receive free eye screenings.
“This event is at the heart of my foundation’s charitable efforts, and through the years I’ve been blessed to have the opportunity to bring the community together for the purpose of helping the under-served,” Hollins said.
“For parents working hard to provide for their families, the supplies will have a profound impact on those families that don’t have the means to properly equip their children.”
Prior to the event, an online auction will be held at lionelhollinscharities.org, which will give fans an opportunity to bid on a number of items, including the chance to add Coach Hollins to their bowling team for the day or hit the links with Coach at Mirimichi Golf Course.
The Wine, SWAG, Jazz & Celebrities event will feature wine tasting, hors d’oeuvres and SWAG from Music World Enterprises, Jack Daniels and more. Special guests for the event, which costs $75 per person and is limited in space, will include gospel-jazz artist Ben Tankard and Memphis’ own Jeremy O’Bryan. The winningest coach in Grizzlies history, Hollins guided Memphis to its first postseason berth since 2006 and led the club to its first seven playoff wins in franchise history last season. Hollins started The Lionel Hollins Charities Bowling for Backpacks event in 2003 and has provided nearly 5,000 backpacks to area youth since its inception.
