The day will kickoff with a 3K Walk Run, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Then from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. comes a day of food, fun, seminars, dental screenings and cleanings and health screenings for blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol, as well as HIV/AIDS.
The Let’s Move Memphis Health Fair and Family Fun Day will be anchored at the new Manassas High School at 1111 North Manassas. It is a collaborative presentation of the New Tri-State Defender in partnership with Manassas High School, Memphis City Schools, and Gospel Temple Missionary Baptist Church.
Several special celebrity guests (to be announced next week) will be in attendance as health advocates, speakers and performers. There will also be a symposium on the State of Health in the African American Community of Greater Memphis, featuring leading health experts and advocates in the community.
Planned Parenthood, Vita Mist, Whole Foods, Memphis Fire and Police Department, Shelby County Sheriff’s Department, Dr. Tim Moore, and Methodist Healthcare will be among the 40 exhibitors expected. “The Thaddeus Matthews Show” will broadcast live on location.
In addition, there will be multiple activities for kids, a deejay and live entertainment from various youth groups, along with food and prize giveaways. Kids will enjoy face painting and games.
The adults will not be left out. They will also be able to participate in fun activities, including cards, dominos and checkers. There will be a Zumba Fitness demonstration as well Chicago Style Step and Hip Hop Dance demonstrations.
“As an advocate for improving the quality of life of our readers and the community at large, the Let’s Move Memphis Health Fair and Family Fun Day is a positive extension of our weekly publication that allows us to directly impact families in a real and tangible way,” said TSD President and Publisher Bernal E. Smith II.
“Access to health care, information and even healthy foods is a real challenge for some residents and we want to be a leader in bringing these things to the community and bringing families together in the process.” Smith said.

Current event sponsors include Methodist Healthcare, Nike, AT&T, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Mid-South Gastroenterology Group (Dr. Phillip Bowden), Memphis City Schools, “The Thaddeus Matthews Show”, Comcast, WLOK, WMC-TV, and Real Times Media.
More than 1000 adults and children attended the 2010 Summer Health Fair.
