’68 Sanitation Strike workers focus of Labor Department honors

 

The U.S. Department of Labor is reaching out to the surviving workers of the 1968 Memphis Sanitation Strike and their families in anticipation of the second part of the Labor Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. Alvin Turner, a Sanitation Workers Strike veteran, spoke during the Department of Labor Induction Ceremony in D.C. He talked of what he thought Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. saw when King peeked over the mountaintop mentioned in his last public address.

The ceremony is set for 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the National Civil Rights Museum at 450 Mulberry St. on June 4.

Michael Wald, regional director of the Labor Department’s Office of Public Affairs, said contact already has been made with all the known workers and their families and the families of workers who have died. However, there may be others and an extensive effort is being made to reach out and let them know their presence is desired, he said.

On April 29, the 1968 Memphis Sanitation Workers were inducted into the Department of Labor’s Hall of Fame during a ceremony in Washington that included Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis. The trip to Washington also brought a group of nine surviving workers face to face with President Barack Obama .
