On Saturday, June 18, from noon to 2 p.m., the entire community is invited. Honorary 10th anniversary chairs Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy will be on hand. University of Memphis basketball coach Josh Pastner will make an appearance. Radio personality Stan Bell will serve as master of ceremonies. Stax Academy and New Ballet Ensemble will perform. Crafts and fun activities will punctuate the afternoon and cake and ice cream served.
The official open date for the 330,000 square foot building was Nov. 10, 2001. Organizers are holding the birthday party in June, a few months ahead of the actual anniversary, to encourage family attendance and to draw attention to the library’s Summer Reading program.
Coinciding with the 10th anniversary celebration, the library is in the midst of a 10-for-Ten fundraising effort aimed at 10 key, high-impact areas. Monies raised will be used to enhance collections, upgrade technology, and improve overall library experiences for thousands of customers who rely on the system and its resources every year. Monetary birthday gifts in honor of the 10th anniversary of the Central Library can be brought to the party and contributed to the 10-For-Ten campaign.
Friends of the Library and Kroger Foods are event sponsors.
