Special to the Tri-State Defender

I am a member of the NFL Players All Star Choir that performed during the Super Bowl Gospel Celebration held last Sunday (Feb. 4) at The Music Hall at Fair Park in Dallas.

USA Today has named The Super Bowl Gospel Celebration as “One of the Best Super Bowl Events to Attend”. This legacy concert is the only National Football League (NFL) sanctioned gospel event and attracts top gospel / contemporary Christian artists, marquee active and former NFL players and capacity sell-out crowds.

The Super Bowl 45 NFL Players All Star Choir consists of 35 active and former players giving praise to the Lord through testimony, song and spiritual enthusiasm. The choir made its debut in 2008 under the direction of Grammy Award winning Gospel icon Donnie McClurkin, who returned to lead us in two songs during this year’s Super Bowl gospel event.  Since its inception the Super Bowl Gospel Celebration has drawn crowds in the thousands and has demonstrated growth year on year with recent Super Bowl sell outs of venues in Miami, Detroit, Jacksonville, Houston, San Diego and Phoenix.

My name is Larry M. Mallory, a Memphian, a Melrose Golden Wildcat and a former professional athlete with the World Football League Memphis Southmen Grizzlies and the National Football League’s New York Football Giants. I am a 2nd tenor in the NFL Players All Star Choir and in present consideration for appointment to the NFL Players All Star Choir’s Board of Directors.

My participation in this choir has been a moving experience. The door was opened for me by another Melrose graduate, Marla Jones, owner of Atlanta-based Stirr Marketing, Inc., and major sponsorships director for Results Inc., which produces the Super Bowl Gospel Celebration, the NFL’s only sanctioned Gospel event. When approached, I welcomed the opportunity to be re-associated with a group of motivated people with shared experiences committed to a specific objective. We all welcome the opportunity to again experience the teamwork and camaraderie that was so much a part of the foundation and formulation of our lives.

We begin every team gathering with prayer delivered by a variety of members and end each team session with a prayer followed by football type team chant, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, then one clap. Although we have a few ministers in our group, the Rev. J.D. Hill – a long time choir member – serves as our session leader and provides the background and history of the organization. Each member has the opportunity to state his name, his team, and what impact God has had on his life. There is as much value in SEEING a sermon as it is in HEARING a sermon.

We approach our choir performance seriously with the same competitive commitment to effort, excellence and teamwork displayed in our former lives. Choir members reside across the country and are provided the show objectives and lyrics a month prior to the show. Each member is expected to be prepared to deliver a high energy, high level rehearsal organized and managed by a seasoned professional director.

The Super Bowl Gospel Celebration required two intense rehearsals, one in the host hotel and the other at the performance venue. The host hotel rehearsal attracted a growing crowd due to the many Super Bowl parties and activities taking place. The Music Hall at Fair Park sound check rehearsal was extremely exciting because McClurkin, an absolutely amazing vocalist, led it. Mr. McClurkin is a hard working leader who stated, “If you are not sweating you are not singing,” a clear and understandable visual for our group. We were honored to sing two songs with Mr. McClurkin and one song with CeCe Winans.

The evening was filled with excitement beginning with a Red Carpet Entry for NFL Players All Star Choir members inclusive of interviews, autographs and photo sessions. As we prepared for “ShowTime” we were able to interact with many of the other featured acts such as Marvin Sapp, Mary-Mary, Israel Houghton and The New Breed.

Prior to the evening performance, many celebrities and former players such as Jessie Jackson, Emmitt Smith, Mel Blount and John Stallworth visited us. Between acts, various NFL athletes – Tim Brown, A. Randall-El and more – delivered on-stage testimonies and spiritual commitment.

Melanie Few-Harrison, Founder and President of Results Inc., produces the Super Bowl Gospel Celebration. It was Few-Harrison’s vision to have NFL football players singing and praising the Lord. Results Inc. is an urban faith-based entertainment and promotions agency with faith-based initiatives to reach faith-oriented consumers.

In general the evening was a resounding success concluded with a hearty Texas reception with never ending food and drink. We reluctantly said our goodbyes while anxiously looking forward to events in 2012, especially Super Bowl Indianapolis.
