As part of his three-day tour of Memphis, the Grizzlies will honor Peña during the first half of the game and present him with his own personalized Grizzlies jersey to commemorate his stop at FedExForum. The Elvis enthusiast will also be able to enjoy the Grizzlies annual Elvis-themed game, where in-game promotions and activities will be centered around The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll and his lasting legacy.
Peña was one of 33 miners brought to safety last October after 69 days of being trapped underground. A self-described major Elvis Presley fan, the 34 year old asked for Elvis music to be sent into the mine so that the trapped workers could use the music to keep their spirits up. After being rescued, Peña was invited to Memphis by Elvis Presley’s Graceland and the Memphis Conventions and Visitors Bureau to take part in the 2011 Elvis Presley Birthday Celebration.
Peña, who participated in the New York Marathon following his rescue, is also expected to make an appearance at the Grizzlies practice on Thursday and speak to the team about overcoming obstacles.
