Greater Metro

TSD Holiday Parade on Saturday!

After two consecutive weeks of rain and inclement weather, it appears the third time is the charm! At last and to our delight, and that of many of our dedicated and patient readers, The New Tri-State Defender will host the first TSDMemphis.com Holiday Parade in downtown Memphis on Saturday, Dec. 22.

The holiday parade marks the continued growth and evolution of our publication in our ongoing quest to inform, inspire and elevate our community. It also marks the renewal of a Memphis tradition, with the return of a Christmas-season parade to downtown. We intend to build upon this first year to have one of the city's most anticipated annual holiday events.

The first parade in the city that will grace the pavement of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue will also incorporate a well-deserved salute to the Whitehaven High School football team, students and staff. Whitehaven's football team won the TSSAA state title in Division 1, 6A in Cookeville, Tenn., on Dec. 1.

Due to the various postponements, we lost a few of the school groups and bands that were originally scheduled to participate, however, we remain excited about this new beginning. In the midst of so much despair and anguish felt within our community during the last week, we hope that this parade can be a source of joy and a reminder of the importance of coming together and simply enjoying the presence of each other in peace and love.

We invite the entire Greater Memphis community to come out and share in this festive celebration of the holiday season and to join us in staking out ground for a new tradition.

The parade will begin at 11 a.m.

Here is the route: Begin at the intersection of Fourth St. and Beale Street, head west on Beale to Second St., proceed south on Second St. to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Ave., then east on MLK to Third St., head north on Third St. to Beale Street Alley, and then east back to Fourth St., where it will culminate.

Early arrival is encouraged.

If you have not sent your entry form, please do so today!!!

For more information on how to participate in the parade, contact Nina Johnson at 901-679-8545, or call the TSD offices at 901-523-1818.
