Alpha Memphis Education Foundation acquires former Whitehaven Branch Library

alpharendering-600The former Whitehaven Branch Library at 4122 Barton Drive has been acquired by Alpha Memphis Education Foundation, Inc. to serve as its local headquarters and community outreach/programming center.

Alpha Memphis Education Foundation, Inc. (AMEF) is a 501c(3) non-profit corporation dedicated to empowering the underserved and under-represented citizens of Greater Memphis. The Foundation is the Non-Profit Charity Foundation of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the first inter-collegiate fraternity founded by African American males.

The building was acquired by AMEF from the City of Memphis in May after being vacant for over 10 years. On Saturday, July 20 from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. the foundation will host a community clean-up of the site in anticipation of an extensive renovation of the building. AMEF is inviting the general public and members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. to tour the building and to enjoy the food, fun and fellowship.

Founding in 2002, AMEF "promotes, encourages and empowers youth by providing at risk and economically disenfranchised citizens with opportunities to fulfill their dreams." The foundation hosts educational seminars, community-based workshops, and mentoring opportunities as part of its outreach programming. Through its main program, Youth Leadership Development Institute, the foundation seeks to "destroy the systemic problems faced by the community."

The foundation also hosts an annual memorial golf tournament and the Black and Gold Gala. It gives back to the community through its annual scholarships to deserving high school seniors entering their freshman year in college.
