Bar-Kays to perform at MCS Alumni Gala

A gold medalist, a fearless advocate and an investment banker will be among the six deserving individuals to be inducted into the Memphis City Schools Hall of Fame this year.  A gold medalist, a fearless advocate and an investment banker will be among the six deserving individuals to be inducted into the Memphis City Schools Hall of Fame this year.

This year’s honorees are Sara Lewis, Charles McVean, Shannon Brown, Rochelle Stevens, David Troy Francis and Barbara A. Dortch-Okara. Past inductees have included such notable Memphians as actress Kathy Bates, NBA players Anfernee Hardaway and Lorenzen Wright and singer and musician Isaac Hayes.

Guests will be treated to dinner and a performance by the legendary Barkays. It’s fitting that the foundation would choose the Memphis band The Bar-Kays to perform in a setting where they are honoring their own.

The Bar-Kays perform over 100 dates per year, but very few at home.

“Were always excited to be able to play in our hometown,” says Larry Dodson, front man of the Bar-Kays.

“It’s for a great cause. We tour across the country and the world, but very rarely do we get a chance to play in Memphis.”

The Memphis City Schools Annual Gala will be April 30 at the East Memphis Hilton. For more information on the gala and this year’s honorees, visit http://www.givemcs.org/gala.
