Two years of hard work, practicing twice a week and learning the ancient Japanese discipline of Shotokan paid off for Orange Mound Community Center students of the Gunn's Karate- Do.
Orange Mound Community Center's director, Kristine Strickland, instructor Marcellus Gunn, students and proud parents traveled to their first karate tournament in Greenwood, Miss., winning an impressive total of: 10 first places, 5 second place, a third-place and the Grand Champion.
Every Tuesday and Friday, you can hear the Japanese language ringing through the Orange Mound Community Center as instructor Gunn prepares his students for competition. The workouts are rigorous, while the techniques require concentration, determination and dedication. Gunn said this level of commitment builds strong physical and mental discipline, boosting confidence in his students who range from age six to over forty.
Instructor Gunn extends an open invitation to those of all ages with any skill level to join his class. All you must have is a will and loose fitting work out clothing. Classes are free and held every Tuesday and Friday at 6 p.m. for beginners at the Orange Mound Community Center.
