Historic cancer research effort kicks off at Brown Baptist

cancerReasearch1The American Cancer Society kicked off its community-wide Cancer Prevention Study – 3 (CPS-3) enrollment at Brown Missionary Baptist Church on June 3. It was the first of three enrollments in Memphis, and it maxed out its enrollment capacity at 150 enrollees.

The five-hour enrollment offered to the community and congregation was held in conjunction with three church services that morning and afternoon.

Memphis will continue its faith-based enrollments at two additional locations in June: Church Health Center Wellness on June 28 and Hickory Ridge Towne Centre on June 30. Men and women between the ages of 30 and 65 who have never been diagnosed with cancer are invited to participate in CPS-3.

CPS-3 will help researchers better understand the lifestyle, environmental, and genetic factors that cause or prevent cancer.

cancerReasearch2"My mom is a two-time cancer survivor and I'm doing all I can to make sure my children don't have to say that," said one Brown Baptist study participant. "I really believe this (CPS-3) is part of the answer."

To enroll in the study, individuals will go to a local enrollment location; sign an informed consent form, complete a brief survey, have their waist circumference measured; and give a small blood sample.

The in-person enrollment process takes approximately 20 to thirty 30 minutes to complete. A comprehensive follow up survey will be mailed to the participant's home that asks for information on lifestyle, behavioral, and other factors related to their health. Upon completion of the process, the Society will continue to send periodic follow-up surveys (every two years) to update participant information and annual newsletters with study updates and results.
