Debate League nears city championships

 

High school debaters brought together in teams by the Memphis Urban Debate League (MUDL) faced off after words of encouragement from the Dwight Fryer, the league’s executive director.

The issue in the form of a question was whether to withdraw weapons from Turkey. The setting was Overton High School last Saturday (Feb. 19)

High school debaters brought together in teams by the Memphis Urban Debate League (MUDL) faced off after words of encouragement from the Dwight Fryer, the league’s executive director. Form good and positive relationships, do critical thinking and make good impressions, said Fryer.

The debate winners were: 1st place, Overton High School – Keenan Fox, senior, and Khedrick Caston, Junior; 2nd place, Ridgeway High School – Tajuan Reed, junior, and Deanesha Reed, senior; 3rd place, Middle College High School –Christopher Crutcher, senior, and Wynter-Haley Scott, freshman.

The Memphis Urban Debate League city championship will be held on March

25-26 at Christian Brothers University. The first and second place winners

will compete in New York at the national championship.

The National Association for Urban Debate Leagues recently selected the MUDL as one of three finalists for the Best New League award. The winner will be announced at the 2011 Urban Debate National Championship in New York City in April.
