The Malone for Shelby County Mayor camp (#maloneformayor2014) escorted its candidate, Deidre Malone, to the Shelby County Election Commission at noon Monday and filed the petition that makes the former Shelby County Commissioner an official candidate for Shelby County Mayor.
"I can't thank all of my supporters enough for their continued outpour of kindness and their commitment to this campaign," said Malone to her supporters in the lobby of the commission offices.
"We are going to win this race one person at a time, and it starts with you and these 65 names on this official document," she said, holding up the petition.
The primary election is a little more than 90 days away. Malone has an abbreviated platform posted on her website, www.deidremalone.com, and her campaign reports that more than 900 people have begun engaging the candidate on her official Malone for Mayor Facebook page.
The first African American woman to chair the Shelby County Commission, Malone has long been active in local Democratic Party politics. She is the president and CEO of The Carter Malone Group, a public relations, marketing and advertising firm.
A graduate of Jackson State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism and a minor in Marketing, Malone attended Christian Brothers University and is pursuing a Master's degree in Business Administration.
She is married to Dr. Patrick Malone, chief health officer, Health Loop, a subsidiary of the Regional Medical Center at Memphis. The couple has been married 29 years and has three children, Patrick "Kirk" II, Brian and Kyle.
