Lavell Crawford: A funny family man

My phone rang displaying an out-of-area phone number. And like you and I do, I put on the “business professional voice.” You know the one that says, “hello,” but also, “what do you want?” Just as soon as I heard his voice I remember thinking, “It’s Lavell Crawford, he’s about an hour early.”

“What’s wrong bro, you hiding from bill collectors?” he asked.

I laughed at the truth.

Then came an off-the-cuff bit.

Comedian Lavelle Crawford is in Tunica this week (Sept. 29-Oct.1), packing a comedy routine that he says will make you forget about your bills, problems and heartaches. (Courtesy photo)

“I remember them days. Every time you turn around they calling. And the worst part is that I really wanted to pay them. But I had folks that owed me, so I couldn’t. I’m telling you, here’s a life lesson: don’t ever loan anybody money. They are not going to pay you back, and they might even die next week. You go to the funeral and people asking you did you get him some flowers and I‘m like, “naw.” I just gave his butt $500 dollars last week.”

I see you’re getting ready to come down to Tunica and do a show, so how are you feeling about that, I asked.

“I feel real good. It’s been a long time since I came to y’all’s area. I never been to Tunica but I did do the play, “Why Men Cry in the Dark,” in Memphis back in 2001. I had fun doing that one. It was at the Orpheum, they had them aromatherapy candles burning in my dressing room and I fell a sleep. They had to come wake me up because I was late,” he said, his smile carrying through the phone.

You’ve been doing big things in entertainment and Lavell Crawford has become a household name, I said. Any highlights you care to speak of, any moments of accomplishments?

“My biggest moments aren’t really on the stage. While my career includes many big things, I look at my wife and my children as my biggest accomplishments. Being able to balance road life with my home life is something else,” said Crawford.

“This black love thing is tough. It takes a minute. We dated for six years and had two kids and now we’ve been married for three years and just recently had my son, L. J., who is 10 month’s old. It’s a lot, but I’m cool. I’m from St. Louis and we know a little bit about working hard for what you want out of life.”

Don’t get him wrong. Crawford has his pleasures as well.

“I’m a reoccurring guest on ‘The Steve Harvey Morning Show” and I’m doing my TV thing with “Breaking Bad.” So it’s not all tough. Still, I do know that many people actually do have it much more serious and harder than I do right now, so I’m mindful of that and I’m thankful.”

Truth is, Crawford just wants everybody to come on out to the show.

“Leave your bills, problems and heartache at the house and let’s laugh for awhile. I’m leaving all mine at home to. Making people laugh makes me feel good. So it’s a win-win situation.”
