So long, Vesta; Rest in peace!

I was listening to the “Tom Joyner Morning Show” a few days ago when he played one of his show jingles and mentioned that Vesta (Williams) was singing on it. I thought to myself, “Oh wow, I haven’t heard anything from Vesta in a while.” The next day, however, I would actually hear the sad news out of California that she had passed away from a possible drug overdose in a hotel room in El Segundo at age 53.

Hey, did you know that Vesta started her career as a back-up singer for Chaka Khan, Anita Baker and Sting? It was in 1986, however, when she would release her first album simply titled “Vesta.” That album spawned her biggest single, “Congratulations,” which was written from the perspective of someone saying goodbye to a former lover who is about to get married to someone else.

Years would go by without another major hit for Vesta, and she found herself getting into acting in the 1993 Mario Van Peebles film, “Posse,” and several episodes of “Sister Sister” as the best friend of Jackee Harry’s character. She would even blame the lapse of her career on her weight, eventually losing 100 pounds in the mid-90’s.

Although I really don’t like to write stories like this one, the words from “Congratulations” are playing in my head as I type.

“Saw an old friend on the street, she said today’s your wedding, my heart stopped, a tear dropped…”

I loved that song and still do.

Vesta, rest in peace!

The Queen returns

The Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, is coming back home to the Mid South and you can catch her in one of her rare appearances on Nov. 12th at Harrah’s Tunica Event Center at 9 p.m.

You know it’s gonna be a mix of down home soul mixed, with a little bit of gospel and blues, right? It’s always good to see Ree Ree come back home every now and then, huh? Get your tickets now through all Ticketmaster outlets and Ticketmaster.com.

 Katt Williams

If you have seen any of the “Friday” movies with Ice Cube, you no doubt remember the third installment very well. I don’t think it would have been as great if Katt Williams had not been a part of it.  Wouldn’t it be cool if there were another installment in the series, with both Katt Williams and Chris Tucker? Williams is one of the funniest guys in comedy these days and he is coming to the Mid-South on Nov. 4t at the Desoto Civic Center to prove just that. Tickets are available now.

Mr. Brown & Cora

Fans of Tyler Perry’s “Meet the Browns” or any of his plays no doubt love David and Tamela Mann. Well, they will be coming to the Cannon Center on Oct. 23. Get ready for some singing and an all out great time. Tickets are available though all Ticketmaster outlets and Ticketmaster.com. In the meantime, you can catch them both each Wednesday night for “Meet the Browns” on TBS…very funny.
