Work with me, the weekend’s coming

“Final Destination 5” is no joke. Not only is it intense, it is also in 3-D. This film is not for the faint of heart. I’m still having chest pains.

At the box office

I usually try to shy away from the “Final Destination” movies for one reason. My nerves really aren’t that good. I don’t know if you have gotten a chance to check out any of the first four installments, but trust me when I say that “Final Destination 5” is no joke. Not only is it intense, it is also in 3-D. This film is not for the faint of heart. I’m still having chest pains.

I keep hearing a lot about the film “Planet of the Apes: Rise of the Apes,” which for some reason, I have no desire to see. This weekend however, I plan to take it down a notch and check out the much-hyped film, “The Help.” Based on the book from the same name, the story follows three women who strike up an unusual relationship.

Yeah, I know it’s a chick flick, but that’s what I do. I watch the films for you then I tell you if you should go out and catch it right? I’ll share my thoughts with you next week.

Cedric The Entertainer

One fourth of the Kings of Comedy makes his way into town this week!  Reunion Memphis and Mix & Mingle Entertainment presents “Cedric the Entertainer & Friends” this Saturday at the Cannon Center. Comedian J.J. from BET’s “ComicView” is among the friends.

Malik S. Cedric is coming along too. Cedric was actually here a couple of years ago and I got a chance to meet him and get a picture. He is actually one of the coolest and humblest celebrities I have ever met. He also has a game show that recently debuted on NBC called “It’s Worth What?”

You can still get your tickets to the show at all Ticketmaster outlets, Ticketmaster.com and the Cannon Center Box office. There will be an official after party at Level II, if you’re looking for something to do after the show.

Nick Cannon adds another gig

Nick Cannon can’t seem to find enough to do with his time. Who does he think he is, Myron Mays? In addition to being a syndicated radio show host, Nickelodeon programming executive and host of NBC’s “America’s Got Talent,” Cannon has expanded his resume and booked a recurring role on NBC’s upcoming sitcom “Up All Night.” Not only is this guy putting in the work, he is also a new parent of twins, along with his wife, singer Mariah Carey. Perhaps being a celebrity parent is very expensive. You can check him out in his new role when it premieres on NBC Sept. 14th.

My birthday party

Labor Day weekend this year will be “What’s Happening Weekend!” Why? Because it’s the weekend of my 38th birthday. And fter months of prodding and encouragement, I have decided to hold a birthday party. Consider this your invitation!

Go ahead and mark your calendars for Sept. 3 and join me at the Zodiac Lounge located at 6135 Mount Moriah Rd. Ext. Make sure you get plenty of sleep the night before, because we don’t plan to get any sleep until sometimes early Sunday morning. It’s a party right? We will make sure we shut down in time for you to make it to church.

Extra! Extra!

As I am writing this column, there is a breaking story that has caught my eye. I have just received information that gospel artist Tonex has decided to leave gospel music and take on a new role of gay pop activist. Yes, you read correctly. I met Tonex once at an industry event. He seemed like a nice guy.

Next week: I will be sure to give you a full report on Tonex, the Cedric show and the 411 on how Jill Scott’s concert at the FedExForum turned out this week as well. Until then, that’s what’s happening.

(Check me out on Facebook, Twitter or visit www.whatshappeningmyron.com. Got an event you’d like me to talk about...or attend? Get at me! I’m at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. !)
