Lauryn Hill vents about racism, slavery and IRS in open letter

  • Written by Carrie Healey/The Grio

lauryn-hill-500Lauryn Hill took to her Tumblr page this past Friday to post an open letter, venting about slavery, racism and the IRS.

The Grammy Award winning singer and rapper was recently found guilty of tax evasion on an estimated $1.8 million. Hill was sentenced to three months in jail.

The post, entitled "MLH On Racism," opens addressing the concept of "reverse racism," calling it "flawed, if not absolutely ridiculous."

In the paragraphs that follow, Hill says black people remain, "in many ways a shattered community, disenfranchised, forcefully removed from context and still caged in, denied from making truly independent choices and experiencing existential freedom."

She went on to reference her personal tax problems by saying, "taxation without proper representation, might I remind you, was the very platform of protest that began the Revolutionary War."

"I shuddered during sentencing when I kept hearing the term 'make the IRS whole,'" the singer said. "The entire time, I thought, who has made black people whole?!"
