Second Congregational to celebrate 143 years

Second Congregational United Church of Christ celebrates its 143rd Anniversary on Sunday (Nov. 20) with two services. Second Congregational United Church of Christ – an historic church in South Memphis that has been allied with The LeMoyne-Owen College and the “Journey Toward Justice Movement” since post-Reconstruction – celebrates its 143rd Anniversary on Sunday (Nov. 20) with two services.

Dr. Marc Wessels, associate conference minister of the Missouri/Mid South Conference of the United Church of Christ, will be the featured speaker during the 11 a.m. service. He will speak on “Keeping the Faith:  Fulfilling the Promise.”

The Rev. Earle Fisher will be the featured speaker during an ecumenical service at 4:30 p.m.  He will speak on the observance theme: “God is Still Speaking, Imagine What is Possible.” Pastor at Abyssinian Baptist Church and ordained in both the Baptist Church and the Christian (Disciples of Christ) denominations, Fisher is a writer, preacher, social activist and an adjunct professor of religion and theology at The LeMoyne Owen College (LOC). A graduate of LOC and Memphis Theological Seminary, Fisher’s work focuses on the rhetoric and impact of black preaching, hip-hop and young adult theology.

Also featured on the evening program will be the Rev. Cheryl Cornish of First Congregational United Church of Christ, and Pastor Paul Eknes-Tucker and the musical aggregation from Holy Trinity United Church of Christ.

Always a feature of the yearly celebration at Second Congregational is the LeMoyne-Owen Gift. Receiving the gift will be LOC President Johnnie B. Watson.

Located at 764 Walker Ave., Second Congregational Church is on the National Register of Historic Places. The Rev. Glenwood P. Roane, esq., is the host pastor and will preside at both services. For more information, call 736-3091.
